The village of Durgerdam just outside and looking onto Amsterdam
Along the dike of Durgerdam, a tiny village just outside Amsterdam, opposite the newly built islands of IJburg, a plan the Durgerdam people didn’t like. Although it is a small community they did make some noise against the damming of the river IJ. The nation’s capital needs to expand and they weren’t going to cooperate. They felt their view over the river IJ would be spoilt by the suburban skyline of IJburg. Probably also bringing the river traffic closer to home. It may seem pittoresk but there is a lively awareness of where this village wants to go, what it will be. And what not.
Cycling along the dyke on a late summer Sunday I came across a gallery, with some work on display. The art scene, voicing ideas?
