Last night just before falling asleep, the sound of singing entered the room from the street below. It was a group of men, cycling past and singing out loud, on their way to the inner city, warming up for the carnival. It’s still lingering, it was an old Dutch song Oh Waterlooplein, about Waterloo Square, where a daily flea market has been located for decades, a place with a Real Amsterdam Vibe, with real Amsterdam folk.
It is maybe not as real as it used to be, but listening to the lyrics of the song it seems it was always this way: “Pretty and ugly at the same time, poor but rich in a way, nostalgia with a twist of fun”… It’s got a great Lalala-factor 😉
