Outsiders Art at different locations of the Hermitage in Amsterdam, from March 17. (Painting by Sijtze Keur, collection Cordaan)
For the first time, the Netherlands will have its own Outsider Art Museum, with world-class works of art by international outsider* artists. The Hermitage in Amsterdam is the museum to welcome the prodigies of this newly recognized group of creatives.
I’m excited to go see! I wonder if these ‘untrained’ artists show more unconditioned expression in their work, the way children do.
*) Outsiders, in this case, are people with sometimes physical or psychological restrictions, who are not concerned with commercial objectives and do not reflect on current art movements. Outsider art is not commonly accepted in regular galleries.
