The year started with the infinitely sad departure of my childhood tv hero Aart Staartjes on January 12. He crashed his scoot mobile at the age of 81.

My childhood tv hero Aart Staartjes. He crashed his scoot mobile at the age of 81. I saw him in a cafe last year, he was sitting across the table having a jenever. He had a twinkle in his eye, he looked good.

I saw him a year or so ago – in real life for the first time! – in Café ‘t Hooischip in Amsterdam. He was sitting across the room having a jenever (gin) with another old skool looking man; two buddies drinking, catching up. He had a twinkle in his eye, he looked good.

Very similar look to this painting. It’s the winning portrait from a tv show painting competition called Sterren op het doek (Stars on canvas).
